HISTORY OF MASS IN HONOR OF ST PATRICK
The Mass in Honor of St Patrick was started when Shamrock Club Color Guard director Chuck McLaughlin and Color Guard member and Dublin native Joe
Pembroke decided to honor the patron saint in a manner that was much more religious. In late 1984, Chuck went to the Shamrock Club board and proposed that a Mass be held prior ro the parade. He chose St Patrick's
Parish on Milwaukee's South Side because it was his boyhood parish, and that it was also the home of many of Milwaukee's immigrant Irish families.
Interior of St Patrick's Church
St Patrick's is a beautiful church, decorated in Celtic knots and crosses. Many members of the Shamrock Club donated hours on its remodeling and restoration, and the Shamrock Club donated over $30,000
towards the work.
The Mass combines Irish and English hymns, pagentry, from the many Irish cultural and religious societies, and is a wonderful way to start a day of celebrating St Patrick.
Former Milwaukee Archbishop, and now New York City Cardinal Timothy Dolan was brought to tears during the singing of Lady of Knock.
Over the history of the Mass, we have had archbishops, bishops, and now one Cardinal celebrating the liturgy.
